  1. Flood alert issued in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district after Pulichintala dam gate washes away. Revenue department officials in Krishna district started evacuating people from low-lying areas along the river as the flood discharge will steadily increase to 6 lakh cusecs by Thursday night.
  2. Rajya Sabha passed Airports Economic Regulatory Authority of India (Amendment) Bill, 2021 on 04 Aug 2021. AERA bill proposes to amend definition of ‘major airport’ in accordance with Airports Economic Regulatory Authority Act, 2008 (AERA Act).

What is Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) : Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana is a food security welfare scheme announced by the Government of India in March 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in India. The program is operated by the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. This scheme as part of Atmanirbhar Bharat to supply free food grains to migrants and poor. During the period May – November 2021, more than 81.35 crore people will be provided 5 kg free wheat/rice per person / month along with 1 kg free whole chana to each family per month. Wheat has been allocated to 6 States/UTs, – Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Delhi and Gujarat and rice has been provided to the remaining States/UTs. This is over and above the regular monthly entitlements under National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA).

Families belonging to the Below Poverty Line – Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Households (PHH) categories will be eligible for Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana scheme.

Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the continuation of ‘Samagra Shiksha Scheme’ for school education for further five years. scheme would continue from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2026. This scheme emphasises on improving the quality of school education by focussing on two T’s – Teacher and Technology.
  3. What is samagra Shiksha scheme?
    The Samagra Shiksha scheme is an integrated scheme for school education covering the entire gamut from pre-school to class XII. The scheme treats school education as a continuum and is in accordance with Sustainable Development Goal for Education (SDG-4). MAJOR FEATURES

  4. No more registration fees for electric vehicles. The Indian govt has given the green signal to a landmark rule. In a bid to attract more people to consider and buy electric vehicles, the central government has scrapped the registration fees of electric cars completely.

  8. Bombay High Court has asked Maharashtra Govt to consider issuing a vaccination card to allow fully inoculated people to travel in local trains. Stating that it is a matter of livelihood of poor people who cannot afford to spend too much on travel.
  9. In Chhattisgarh, one person was killed, 11 injured in a Maoist attack on 05 Aug morning in Dantewada district of Bastar division. Maoist triggered an IED blast targeting the vehicle carrying 12 civilians.
  10. The Supreme Court on 05 Aug (Thursday) agreed to hear a batch of petitions seeking a court-monitored SIT probe into Pegasus snooping controversy on August 10 as it asked the petitioners to serve copies of their respective petition on the Centre.
  11. In Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on 05 Aug (Thursday) held a “cycle yatra” to raise issues such as price rise, unemployment, farm laws and crime rate.

18 . In Madhya Pradesh, the rescue & relief operations are continuing in full swing in the flood-affected areas. NDRF, SDRF, Army and BSF teams have rescued more than 6,000 people from 240 affected villages in Northern MP.

  1. Punjab Sports Minister Rana Gurmeet Sodhi announced a cash award of Rs 1 crore each for the players from the state in the Indian men’s hockey team. Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) President Bibi Jagir Kaur has announced to award Rs 1 crore to the Indian hockey team. She said the SGPC will also award Rs 5 lakh each to all players of Punjab who are participating in Olympic.
  2. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Thursday spoke to members of Indian men’s hockey team over the telephone and congratulated them for winning an Olympic medal after 41 years.
  3. President Ram Nath Kovind has congratulated Ravi Kumar Dahiya on winning silver medal in the 57kg freestyle wrestling competition and Indian Hockey Team victory for Bronze at Tokyo Olympics and bringing glory to India.
  4. The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) has confirmed that it will launch the earth observation satellite EOS-3 aboard its GSLV Mk III vehicle on August 12 at 5.43am from the country’s only spaceport at Sriharikota.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is evaluating recent trial results in which Israel Weapon Industries (IWIs) Negev NG-7 light machine gun (LMG), fielded by PLR Systems owned by the Adani Group, has emerged as the front runner for the contract to supply the Indian Army (IA) 41,000 LMGs worth over Rs 2,200 crore.

  3. Project on Dam Safety Program: Central Water Commission of India & World Bank signed a $250 million project on 4 Aug 2021 for long-term dam safety program. This project will help in strengthening dam safety by building dam safety guidelines, bringing in global experience, and by introducing innovative technologies.
  4. The ministry of external affairs on 05 Aug (Thursday) said the recent India-China military talks on the eastern Ladakh row were “constructive” and both sides agreed to resolve the remaining issues in an “expeditious manner”

  1. United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has declared that it is against the restoration of Islamic emirate in Afghanistan.
  2. Thailand has banned sunscreens containing chemicals that damage coral from all of its marine national parks. Concerns are growing that lotions tourists use for sun protection are harming slow-growing corals. The Thai Department of Conservation said four ingredients commonly found in sun creams were shown to destroy coral larvae, obstruct coral reproduction and cause reef bleaching.
    Anyone flouting the ban can be fined up to 100,000 baht (£2,100).
  3. Mob attacks temple in Pakistan’s Punjab, damages idols : mob attacked the Hindu temple at Bhong city of Rahim Yar Khan district, some 590 kms from Lahore, on 04 Aug (Wednesday) in reaction to an alleged desecration of a Muslim seminary by a minor Hindu boy. The eight-year-old Hindu boy last week had allegedly urinated at a library of the seminary that caused tensions in Bhong, where Muslims and Hindus have been living peacefully for decades.

How food/liquids are preserved

The primary objective of food preservation is to prevent food spoilage until it can be consumed

Pasteurization is a process for preservation of liquid food. It was originally applied to combat the souring of young local wines. the process is mainly applied to dairy products. In this method, milk is heated at about 70 °C (158 °F) for 15–30 seconds to kill the bacteria present in it and cooling it quickly to 10 °C (50 °F) to prevent the remaining bacteria from growing. The milk is then stored in sterilized bottles or pouches in cold places. This method was invented by Louis Pasteur, a French chemist, in 1862.

High-pressure food preservation or pascalization refers to the use of a food preservation technique that makes use of high pressure. “Pressed inside a vessel exerting 70,000 pounds per square inch (480 MPa) or more, food can be processed so that it retains its fresh appearance, flavor, texture and nutrients while disabling harmful microorganisms and slowing spoilage.” By 2005, the process was being used for products ranging from orange juice to guacamole to deli meats and widely sold.

STORY OF ATMA LINGA

According to Shiva Purana : Ravana desired immortality and invincibility. For this purpose, he worshipped Lord Shiva with his whole heart to obtain atma linga (soul of Shiva) which is supposed to give its possessor immortality and invincibility. Pleased by Ravana’s devotion, Shiva appeared before him and asked him his wish. Knowing the consequences of this act, Vishnu changed the mind of Ravana and instead of asking for atma linga, he asked for Goddess Parvati and lord Shiva offered him that. On his way back to Lanka, Narada muni appeared before him and told him that lord has not given the real Parvati and the real Parvati is in Pathala. So, Ravana goes there and marries the girl according to the description of narada muni, assuming the girl to be real Parvati.

On reaching Lanka, when asked by his mother about atma linga, he understood the game played by Vishnu. Determined to obtain atma linga, he once again starts pleasing Lord Shiva. When the lord appeared before him, he asked for atma linga. Shiva gives him the atma linga on a condition that he should not keep the atma linga on ground before the destination as it will get rooted at the same spot and will never move. Once again, to fail the motives of Ravana, Vishnu created the illusion of dusk. As Ravana used to perform an evening ritual he got worried as how he will do it as he was having atma-linga in his hands.
Lord Ganesh, disguised as a brahmin boy, comes in front of him and Ravana requests him to hold the atma linga so that he can perform his rituals. Ganesh accepts the request but on a condition that he would call Ravana thrice and if he will not come back then he will place atma linga on ground. When, Ravana was gone to perform the rituals, Ganesh called out his name thrice rapidly at the specific moment when he could not leave the ceremony in between. So, according to the deal, Ganesh then place the atma linga on the ground and vanished from there with his cows. Ravana tried to chase them, but got hold of only one of the cow’s ear. The rest of the cow’s body disappeared and he was left only with ear in a petrified form. The name of that place hence came to be known as Gokarna (gow means cow in Sanskrit and karna means ear).

As specified by lord Shiva, the atma linga was now rooted in Gokarna and was immovable even though Ravana tried hard to lift it. He then gave the name Mahabaleshawar to the atma linga meaning “all powerful”.
The Mahabaleshwar temple is situated along in the west cost of India in north kannada district of north Karnataka, between Gangavalli and Aganashini rivers.
