  12. The Bombay High Court reserved its order on petitions filed by Raj Kundra and his associates Ryan Thorpe. The two had challenged their arrest in a pornography-related case.
  13. PEGASUS is a spyware developed by the Israeli cyberarms firm NSO Group that can be covertly installed on mobile phones (and other devices) running most versions of iOS and Android. The spyware is named after the mythical winged horse Pegasus—it is a Trojan horse that can be sent “flying through the air” to infect phones. The company states that it provides “authorized governments with technology that helps them combat terror and crime. Pegasus was discovered in August 2016 after a failed installation attempt on the iPhone of a human rights activist led to an investigation revealing details about the spyware.
  14. On August 23, 2020, according to intelligence obtained by the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, NSO Group sold Pegasus spyware software for hundreds of millions of US dollars to the United Arab Emirates and the other Gulf States, for surveillance of anti-regime activists, journalists, and political leaders from rival nations, with encouragement and mediation by the Israeli govt.

In July 2021, widespread media coverage part of the Project Pegasus revelations along with an in-depth analysis by human rights group Amnesty International uncovered that Pegasus was still being widely used against high-profile targets. It showed that Pegasus was able to infect all modern iOS versions up to iOS 14.6, through a zero-click iMessage exploit.

    India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier Vikrant, the largest and most complex warship to be built in the country, began its sea trials on 04 Aug (Wednesday) , in a major milestone ahead of its planned induction into the Indian Navy by August next year.

Vikrant’ has a top speed of around 28 knots & cruising speed of 18 knots with an endurance of about 7,500 nautical miles. The vessel has 75 percent indigenous equipment and is the most complex warship ever built by India.

On this day (5 August 2019), the Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019 in the Rajya Sabha to convert Jammu and Kashmir’s status of a state to two separate union territories, namely Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Union Territory of Ladakh. The union territory of Jammu and Kashmir was proposed to have a legislature under the bill whereas the union territory of Ladakh is proposed to not have one. By the end of the day, the bill was passed by Rajya Sabha with 125 votes in its favour and 61 against (67%).The next day, the bill was passed by the Lok Sabha with 370 votes in its favour and 70 against it (84%). The bill became an Act after it was signed by the president.

The two union territories came into existence on 31 October 2019, which was celebrated as National Unity Day.

Why in India are the weights of LPG cylinders 14.2. Kg?

Cylinder should be designed, manufactured and tested as per latest edition of IS-3196 (PART-I): 2006 & IS 3196 (PART III): 1991. Finished wall thickness of the cylinder shall not be less than 2.53mm.

Length of cylinder – 625 to 630 mm
Diameter – 314.4 to 317 mm
Water capacity 33.3ltr
Max working pressure – 16.9kgf/cm2
Test pressure – 25.35 kgf/cm2

Domestic cylinders will have their tare (empty) weight printed on them. The weight of the empty cylinder of 15.3kg is stamped into the neck ring + gas agencies should fill it with 14.2 kg LPG. ±150gm, to the empty gas cylinder weight to arrive at the 29.5kg (Approx) full gas cylinder weight.

Full Gas Cylinder Weight = Empty Gas Cylinder Weight (tare weight) + Domestic Gas Cylinder Weight of Contents.

Earlier the net weight of domestic LPG cylinder was 15 kilograms. This was decided based on the maximum weight a person can carry as per labor rules. When the Bureau of Indian Standards change the specifications (of max RVP) of LPG marketable in India, the weight had to be reduced to accommodate the total volume of LPG that can be filled in the cylinder (max 95% at 65°C). This had to be done as the Inventory of 15 kg LPG cylinders in circulation was very high and a recall was unviable.
