  1. The Health Ministry said that pre-registration through online CoWIN and prior booking of appointment is not mandatory to get the Covid-19 vaccine.

  3. Chandigarh administration eases COVID restrictions & announced that all shops will remain open from 10 am to 7 pm in the city, despite a daily night curfew being in force.

A court in New Delhi on 15 June deferred immediate release of Jawaharlal Nehru University students Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal, who have been granted bail by the Delhi high court in the riots ‘conspiracy’ case. The high court granted them bail and directed them to furnish a personal bond of Rs 50,000 each along with two sureties of the like amount.
  5. The three student activists were arrested in May 2020 and are accused of being the “masterminds” of the February 2020 violence, which had left 53 people dead and hundreds injured. Narwal, along with 17 others, are accused in the case.
  6. Maharashtra govt to provide Rs. 5 lakh assistance to children who have lost their parents during Corona period.

  11. The Haryana government gave nod to increase pension financial assistance under social security schemes with effect from April 1. The Cabinet increased old-age pension and the assistance for widows, handicapped, girl child and eunuchs from Rs 2,250 to Rs 2,500 per month. Financial assistance given to destitute children has been increased from Rs 1,350 to Rs 1,600/month & the assistance to disabled children not going schools has been hiked from Rs 1,650 to Rs 1,950 per month.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDSL) will deliver the first of the four stealth guided missile destroyers to the Indian Navy by October and a Scorpene-class submarine by the end of the fiscal year. Mazagon Dock Limited, is a shipyard situated in Mazagaon, Bombay. It manufactures warships and submarines for the Indian Navy and offshore platforms and associated support vessels for offshore oil drilling. It also builds tankers, cargo bulk carriers, passenger ships and ferries.

  1. India will get delivery of the first three of 24 MH-60R Seahawk helicopters next month, manufactured by the US-based Sikorsky-Lockheed Martin. The fourth-generation MH-60R ‘Romeo’ helicopters will replace India’s British Sea King helicopters acquired in the 1970s.
  2. India likely to join B3W project to counter China’s BRI ; India-SA TRIPS proposal gets support at G7
  • India and the G-7 member countries have agreed on an infrastructural proposal of Build Back Better World (B3W) as an alternative to the Chinese Belt and Road (BRI). Keeping in mind the principles of “transparency and inclusion’’, this was endorsed at the G7 summit.

  1. The govt of Bangladesh has authorised Johnson and Johnson single dose COVID vaccine for emergency use in the country.
  2. Twenty-eight Chinese air force aircraft, including fighters and nuclear-capable bombers, entered Taiwan’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ) on Tuesday, the island’s government said, the largest reported incursion.
  3. 25 killed in gas explosion in Hubei, China. The blast occurred on Sunday (13 June) that ripped through the market in the city of Shiyan which injured 138 people. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a thorough investigation into the cause of the blast.
  4. The National Investigation Agency has announced a reward of 10 lakh rupees for information on two suspects in the Israel embassy blast case.
  5. Recent commercial satellite imagery reveals that China has made substantial progress in the construction of its third aircraft carrier, commonly known as the Type 003. The vessel is slated to become the largest surface combatant in the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and significantly upgrade China’s naval capabilities.
  6. Saudi Arabia cancels Haj performance for foreign pilgrims this year in view of COVID-19 pandemic. Saudi has decided to allow citizens and residents inside the Kingdom only to attend Haj in limited numbers.

How do planes fly? ✈️🛫🛩️🚁

Things can fly quite happily without engines, as gliders (planes with no engines), paper planes, and indeed gliding birds.

Four forces act on a plane in flight. When the plane flies horizontally at a steady speed, lift (up) from the wings exactly balances the plane’s weight (down) and the thrust (forward), exactly balances the drag (rearward). However, during takeoff, or when the plane is attempting to climb in the sky (as shown here), the thrust from the engines pushing the plane forward exceeds the drag (air resistance) pulling it back. This creates a lift force, greater than the plane’s weight, which powers the plane higher into the sky.

A plane’s engines are designed to move it forward at high speed. That makes air flow rapidly over the wings, which throw the air down toward the ground, generating an upward force called lift that overcomes the plane’s weight and holds it in the sky.

For a plane or bird to fly, its wings must produce enough lift to equal its weight. Most wings used in flight are a special shape – called aerofoils (or airfoils). This shape is needed to help generate lift.
