Today’s Legal Updates:

  1. Today The Supreme Court allowed an appeal by the Central government against a Delhi High Court judgment which had allowed a Goods and Services Tax (GST) refund of ₹923 crore to telecom operator Bharti Airtel.
  2. Today the Supreme Court held that a court examining whether a prima facie case exists, is not expected to hold a “mini trial” while granting bail to Thwaha Fasal and Allan Shuaib, accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for having Maoist links.
  3. Today The Bombay High Court quashed the criminal complaint and issuance of summons by a Magistrate court to the Vice President of Amazon India Amit Agarwal.
  4. Today The National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (NCDRC) issued a notice stating that it will start hearing matters physically from November 15, 2021.
  5. Today Former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India Vinod Rai tendered an unconditional apology to former Congress Member of Parliament Sanjay Nirupam in a defamation case filed by the latter in Delhi’s Patiala House District Court.
  6. Today The Karnataka High Court granted bail to Bineesh Kodiyeri, actor and son of veteran CPI(M) leader Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, in a money laundering case.
  7. Today The Kerala High Court Advocates’ Association (KHCAA) has written a latter to the Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court requesting that physical hearings at the High Court and all subordinate courts in the State be resumed from 1st November 2021.
  8. Today The Bombay High Court at Goa has directed lawyers not to read out in open court, evidence in cases involving sexual offences including rape.
  9. Today The Bombay High Court granted bail to Aryan Khan, (son of Shahrukh Khan) in the cruise ship drug case in which Khan is the prime accused.
  10. Today The Central government has notified the appointment of two lawyers as judges of the Rajasthan High Court.
  11. Today The Delhi High Court issued notice in a plea challenging an order of State Bank of India (SBI) to block UPI services on cryptocurrency exchange platform WazirX.
  12. Today The Mumbai Police told the Bombay High Court that 3-days notice will be given to the Zonal Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Sameer Wankhede before arresting him in the extortion case initiated by the State Police against him.
  13. Today The Supreme Court restored the Senior designation of Gujarat lawyer Yatin Oza for a period of two years with effect from 1st January 2022.
  14. Today The Supreme Court is hearing a plea by the Kerala government to ensure that water level in Mullaperiyar dam’s reservoir is not allowed to exceed 139 feet, three feet below the permissible limit of 142 feet prescribed by the 2014 judgment of the top court.
  15. Today The Delhi High Court censured the Shamli Police, Uttar Pradesh (UP) for arresting two men related to a man who had married a woman against the wishes of her family.

  23. Today the Kerala government has told the Supreme Court that the Mullaperiyar dam is extremely vulnerable due to its age and large catchment area and should be decommissioned and a new dam should be built.
  24. The Mumbai Police has set up a 4-member team to investigate allegations of extortion and corruption against Zonal Director of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Sameer Wankhede.
