  1. Today Suvendu Adhikari leader of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has approached the Supreme Court praying that the election petition filed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Calcutta High Court challenging Adhikari’s election from Nandigram constituency in 2021 assembly elections, be transferred out of West Bengal.
  2. Today Sister Lucy Kalappura appeared before the Kerala High Court to challenging her eviction from the Franciscan Clarist Convent in Karakkamala, She is first nun to argue her own case before a court in India.
  3. Today The Supreme Court asked Attorney General for India, KK Venugopal to examine the petition for striking down Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises the offence of sedition.
  4. Today The Supreme Court took suo motu cognizance of the decision of Uttar Pradesh (UP) government to allow the annual Kanwar Yatra amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and stated that “we cannot compromise “even a bit” when third wave of COVID stares at us. 
  5. Yesterday The Delhi High Court issued a notification creating a new nomenclature for cases related to Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) disputes, which shall come into effect immediately.
  6. Today The Gujarat High Court will formally launch live streaming of its proceedings from 17th July, he is the first court in the country to stream its proceedings live to the public.
  7. Today The Supreme Court held that consent of unitholders under a debt scheme will be required for winding up of the scheme and that such consent will be required after notice of the winding up has been published.
  8. Today The Karnataka High Court reiterated that courts cannot refer a case involving non-compoundable offence to Lok Adalats. 
  9. Today The Madras High Court requested the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) to get instructions on measures to weed out “fake journalists” who resort to blackmailing, thereby damaging the image of the fourth pillar of democracy.
  10. Today A 19-year-old youth facing murder charges was granted bail by a Delhi Court, which observed that though he wasn’t “quite a child in the eye of the law,”  he was only a “neo-adult”.
  11. Today The Kerala High Court expressed its shock at posters displayed outside State veterinary hospitals advocating chaining or caging of pet dogs and advising against feeding stray animals.
  12. Interim bail pleas moved in view of the prevailing second wave of COVID-19 and the Mucormycosis pandemic by two men accused in a double murder and dacoity case were recently rejected by a Mumbai Court, wich also observed that the situation in jail appears to be more secure than outside it.

  14. On Monday night A man with criminal cases pending against him, was shot dead inside a lawyer’s chamber in the Dwarka District Court complex in Southwest Delhi.

  16. Today The Bombay High Court admitted three appeals filed by underworld don Rajendra Sadashiv Nikalje @ Chhota Rajan assailing orders passed by Special Courts in Mumbai convicting him of offences under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) and the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Today The Allahabad High Court has issued a series of directions for the time-bound listing of bail applications in cases concerning the Prevention of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012 (POCSO Act), while observing that delays in such matters degrade the liberty of citizens (Junaid v. State of UP).
  18. Today The Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), asked all States and Union Territories to withdraw all the cases registered under Section 66A of the Information Technology Act (IT Act) and not to “book” anyone under the said provision as it has been struck down by the Supreme Court by its judgment in Shreya Singhal v. Union of India.
  19. Today The hearing in a SARFAESI case led the Madras High Court today to orally assure that lawyers may address judges as “sir”, in place of honorifics such as “My Lord” and “Your Lordship.”

Today The Madras High Court made it clear that it would continue hearing petitions before it challenging the validity of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021 (IT Rules, 2021) in the absence of any stay on High Court proceedings by the Supreme Court.
  24. Today The Madras High Court asked the Registrar (Administration) to examine measures to ensure that the green and clean atmosphere of the court campus is maintained at all times.
  25. Today The Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) has decided to verify applications made by approximately 4,000 lawyers for financial assistance meant for COVID-affected lawyers and warned of strict action against any lawyer found to have submitted false COVID reports.

  28. Today The Supreme Court struck down the newly inserted Section 184 of the Finance Act, 2017 as amended by the Tribunal Reforms (Rationalisation and Conditions of Service) Ordinance, 2021 (ordinance) to the extent it fixed the tenure of members and chairperson of tribunals at 4 years.
  29. Today State of Andhra Pradesh has filed a petition before the Supreme Court against Telangana alleging that the latter has been denying them their legitimate share of water for drinking and irrigation purposes.
  30. Today Single-judge Justice Shampa Sarkar of Calcutta High Court will hear the election petition filed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee challenging the election of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram constituency in the 2021 assembly elections.
  31. Yesterday The Madras High Court declined to entertain a suggestion to include Aadhaar details in death certificates to assist the Election Commission in the removal of the names of deceased voters from electoral rolls.
  32. Yesterday Jamia Millia Islamia student Safoora Zargar, who is out on bail in a case related to the Delhi Riots, has been allowed to visit her hometown in Kashmir by a Delhi court.
